Intelligent Implants, an innovative medtech company developing the use of wireless implantable bioelectronics, has moved its Swedish office and lab into the BioVentureHub at AstraZeneca Gothenburg.
John Zellmer, Co-Founder and CEO of Intelligent Implants, provides some background on the company and the reasons for joining the BioVentureHub.
What does Intelligent Implants do?
Intelligent Implants is introducing the first ever wireless implantable bioelectronic stimulation platform that is incorporated into standard orthopedic implants. We are able to get superior bone growth around our implant by electrically stimulating the bone to grow. We can sculpt the bone growth around the implant using current steering, and we monitor the bone growth in real-time using impedance tomography. With excellent large animal trial outcomes, we are now looking to bring our breakthrough technology into the clinic.
Why did you move into the BioVenturehub?
When we learnt about and visited the BioVentureHub, we were impressed and excited by the facilities and the infrastructure. It´s a fantastic opportunity for us as a start-up to be able to take advantage of the infrastructure built up by a leading life science company such as AstraZeneca. At the same time, we can still operate independently as a nimble start-up. We believe that in the BioVentureHub we get the best of both worlds.
What are your ambitions moving forward?
Early next year we are looking forward to our first pre-submission meeting with the FDA and to start working towards our clinical pilot trial that we hope to be able to start within 18 months.
What’s the coolest thing people should know about your company?
We’re developing a standard orthopedic implant that uses electrical signals to stimulate the natural healing of patients’ bone following surgery. It has the potential to reduce healing times by 50% and the risk of not healing post-surgery by 80-90%. In addition, the implant is always connected with the physician’s office, delivering data on the bone healing process and sending notifications when the healing is completed.
